This month’s book review is of East, by Edith Pattou.

I found East attractive on reading the back, because I’m always attracted to retellings of fairy tales, especially the lesser-known ones.  This particular book is a retelling of the Grimm’s fairy tale “East O’ the Sun and West O’ the Moon,” in which a young girl’s beloved is transformed into an animal and she must travel to a mythical country in order to get him back in his human shape.  East combines that story with the beautiful Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche, creating a combination that is both fresh and predictable, with lively characters and skillful setting of the mood and style.

The back story of Rose, the heroine’s “birth direction” is interesting, almost more so than the actual plot.  The story is told from the viewpoints of various characters, allowing the author to keep up with people long after they have dropped out of the main storyline.  Each character has a distinct style, and the switchbacks between them keep an old story interesting.

The trolls and silent, snow-covered forests add just the right amount of creepiness to the fairy tale plotline, but one can get bogged down in certain parts of the novel, which is quite long, with a subplot as well as the basic story of Rose and her white bear.  All in all, this is a well-written book that I would reccomend to anyone who knows their Grimms and Greek myths, as well as readers who might not be farmiliar with the relevant tales.  While reading East, I kept coming across beautiful little nods to both works, and small connections within the novel itself.  This is the kind of novel to be read in closely spaced chunks, to avoid losing interest in the story.

Happy reading!

Sorry I’m so late with the posts, but I traveled alot this month.  Anyway, this review is about LIFE AS WE KNEW IT.  This book is an interesting new end-of-the-world theory.  In Life As We Knew It, a meteor has hit the moon, knocking it closer to the earth, which produces catastophic climate change.  Massive tsunamis, caused by the now-much-stronger pull of the tides, wipe out coastlines, the power goes out, supermarkets run out of food, gas hits $12 a gallon, and volcanos all over the world erupt, even the “dead”  ones, because the moon’s gravity pulls the magma to the surface, causing volcanic ash to blot out the sun… read the book to find out what happens next.  This is a story of survival, and it comes highly recommended.

Avid fans, we have come to the end of the Chicks Trilogy.  In the final installment of the high-school saga, the four friends are “staring down the end of high school” and wondering (or at least Scottie is) if this will be the end of their quartet.  The book begins at Movies In The Park, where we learn that Scottie is making a memory quilt… Will the Chicks survive the new principal, venomous quilters, Bella’s search for a seinor service project, Tay’s new joint custody , Amanda’s debutante duty, and Scottie’s college fears?

Personally, I thought this book was pretty good, the best of the Chicks. (exept for a few pages I skipped.  Call me a wimp,  but I will not read that stuff!)  I thought the author tied up the loose ends that confused me in the first and second books.  If you read the first two, you have to read the last one.  I especially liked Scottie’s college woes and her service project, along with the French Fry Bus, Amanda’s designs, and, well, I always just plain enjoyed reading about Tay.  Don’t worry if you’re sick of chick lit, ’cause next moth will be a very different story!  (Pardon my pun! I couldn’t resist.)  Well, I hope you had fun with these books.  I sure did!

TTFN,

Wildwool (a.k.a. Lily)
